Día's Founder
In March 1996, while being interviewed in Tucson, Arizona, the author and poet Pat Mora learned about the holiday celebrated in Mexico. Realizing that the United States had nothing similar, Pat proposed linking Children's Day, the celebration of childhood and children, with literacy and bilingualism, creating a new holiday: El día de los niños/El día de los libros.

Big Brothers Big Sisters provides children facing adversity, often those of single or low-income households or families where a parent is incarcerated or serving in the military, with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. This mission has been the cornerstone of the organization’s 100-year history. With about 350 agencies across the country, Big Brothers Big Sisters serves nearly 630,000 children, volunteers and families.
The Center for the Study of Multicultural Children’s Literature (CSMCL) is an organization advocating for multicultural children’s literature which includes librarians and library personnel, educators, parents, students, caregivers, and experts in the field of children’s literature. CSMCL awards $500 grants in selected multicultural children’s books to libraries that serve children and their families who are having a Día library program, El Día de los Niños/El Día de los Libros (Children’s Day/Book Day) with an African American focus. The Día grants are funded by CSMCL in partnership with the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) and Pat Mora.
The Children’s Book Council (CBC) is the national nonprofit trade association of children’s book publishers. The CBC offers children’s publishers the opportunity to work together on issues of importance to the industry at large, including educational programming, literacy advocacy, and collaborations with other national organizations. The CBC’s various committees include CBC Diversity, advocating for an inclusive and representative children’s publishing industry.
Colorín Colorado is a free web-based service that provides information, activities and advice for educators and Spanish-speaking families of English language learners (ELLs).
The Ezra Jack Keats Foundation is proud to support Día in 2020 as we share a strong commitment to providing families, libraries and educators with an expanding selection of outstanding multi-cultural children's books. Ezra Jack Keats was the grandfather of diverse children's books starting in 1962, with the creation of his classic book, The Snowy Day.
The EJK Foundation extends the Keats legacy through the Ezra Jack Keats Award, co-administered by the de Grummond Children's Literature Collection at the University of Southern Mississippi. Since 1986, the EJK Award as been presented to an outstanding writer and illustrator early in their career, whose book, in the spirit of Keats, reflects the multi-cultural nature of our country. The EJK Award has supported the careers of some of today's most important makers of diverse children's books.
Additionally, the foundation’s programs include an annual Bookmaking Competition for New York City public school students and the EJK Mini-Grants awarded annually to public school teachers and librarians across the country.

Reading Rockets is a national multimedia literacy initiative offering information and resources on how young kids learn to read, why so many struggle, and how caring adults can help.
The United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY) is the U.S. national section of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY). The mission, to promote international understanding and good will through books for children and adolescents is accomplished through activities such as promotion of International Children’s Book Day, publication of an annual Outstanding International Books List, presentation of the Bridge to Understanding Award, nomination of the United States candidates for the Hans Christian Andersen Award, and support and funding of worthy projects, both domestic and abroad including the Children in Crisis Fund and twinning efforts to assist national sections maintain membership in IBBY.
