The American Library Association (ALA) has chosen Sheryl Orman of Tucson, Arizona as the 2019 Tom and Roberta Drewes Scholarship recipient.

The $3,000 scholarship is awarded to a library support staff worker who is pursuing a master’s degree in library and information science.

Orman currently works as a library page at the Pima County Public Library (Arizona). Her work in this role has sparked a desire in her to increase her knowledge of the library profession. She says she wants to understand how library resources and services are selected, developed and managed so that she can provide more effective customer service to library patrons.

Orman has also taken an interest in children’s services. Recently, she began working with the children’s librarians to facilitate various activities as part of the baby story times at the library. She stated, “It is exciting to be able to encourage the love of learning in a new generation.”

One reference stated that Orman is “diligent, self-motivated and inquisitive. She has proven to be an extremely reliable, hard-working and intelligent worker.”

Another reference stated that Orman is “able to think on her feet, has good attention to detail, and is approachable, dependable, and adaptable. She has tremendous initiative—routinely anticipating the library’s needs. She is knowledgeable about many aspects of the library system. She believes in the power of education and has a thirst to learn and is an advocate of life-long learning. Her enthusiasm, work-ethic and passion suggest her potential to succeed in the library profession.”
