Addressing Conflict Through Difficult and Uncomfortable Dialogues…Why This Is Important
Saturday, 10:30-12:00; MCC-353-355

We live in a changing world and everywhere we turn these days we seem to be encountering interpersonal conflict within our libraries, our professional associations, and our personal environment.  For a wide range of reasons, most individuals do not actually think conflict and are not comfortable engaging in and trying to manage it.  This discomfort can lead us to avoid situations involving conflict or overreact and try to manage it from a position of authority, both of which may not be ideal in addressing the conflict.  In this program, our speaker from The Center for Change and Conflict Resolution will provide insights into better understanding and managing conflict.  Attendees will gain an understanding of recognizing elements contributing to conflict, passive-aggressive behaviors, and get tips on engagement to address or move past difficult conflict-based situations.

Preconferences on Friday, June 22

Resilience in New Orleans: Rebuilding Libraries after Katrina (Tour), 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

In 2005, many academic and public library facilities in New Orleans were badly damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. This tour will visit libraries that were renovated or constructed since that time, including the recently-expanded Howard-Tilton Memorial Library at Tulane University, the award-winning Rosa F. Keller Library and Community Center, and one of two other New Orleans Public Library branches including the new Nora Navra branch (construction schedule permitting). Librarians and designers involved in each project will be our guides and discuss the special challenges they faced. Registration includes bus transportation and boxed lunch.

Leadership and Conflict Management: Managing conflict, drama, and strategies to address the most annoying behaviors, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Research shows leaders spend over 50% of their day engaging in conflict. This preconference workshop will give attendees the opportunity to grow their understanding of the relationship between change, leadership, and effective communication. This session will focus on conflict engagement and management within individuals and organizations, building skills to strategically address and manage conflict, and best practices attendees can immediately apply to positively impact organizational climate. Speaker: Nancy T. Watson, Ph.D., LPC, FAPA, Clinical Professor at Texas A&M University, and TMCA Distinguished Mediator at The Center for Change and Conflict Resolution

Creating the Sustainable Library: The Triple Bottom Line Approach,  12:30 - 4:00 pm

Sustainability is moving beyond environmental concerns to now encompass financial and social issues (e.g., workforce and community) as well. In this preconference, you will learn about the 12 steps of sustainability and how the Triple Bottom Line Approach can be used by libraries of all types to connect to the broader community, and you will develop sustainability plans for your own library. Speaker: Gary L. Shaffer, Ph.D., author of Creating the Sustainable Public Library: the Triple Bottom Line Approach.

To register for any of these preconferences, see the ALA Ticketed Events page.
