Machine-Readable Bibliographic Information Committee (MARBI)

Charge

To encourage the creation of needed standards for the representation in machine-readable form of bibliographic information; to review and evaluate proposed standards; to recommend approval of standards in conformity with ALA policy (especially the ALA Standards Committee); to establish a mechanism for continuing review of standards (including the monitoring of further development). To provide commentary on the content of various implementations of standards to concerned agencies; to maintain liaison with concerned units within ALA and relevant outside agencies.

MARBI consists of nine voting members and three interns. MARBI deliberations also include members of the MARC Advisory Committee, which includes ex-officio representatives of national libraries and bibliographic utilities, and several dozen non-voting liaisons from ALA units and from non-ALA organizations with an interest in issues of library automation standards. This committee is an advisory committee to the Library of Congress.

Get Involved

LITA values committed and active committee members. Qualified members are welcome to volunteer to serve on this committee. Committee members must have an interest in the work of the committee, be able to participate in Committee meetings when scheduled, e.g., Annual Conferences, Midwinter Meetings, or other times of the year as needed and, be able to contribute to the activities of the committee Express your interest in serving on this or other committees by filling out the application form. Generally, appointments take place once a year, during the spring. Committee service usually begins following Annual Conference, about July 1, for two year terms. Exceptions to this include the LITA National Forum Planning Committee (18 months before the Forum through the December after the Forum), the Nominating Committee (18 months before the election through the election) and, the Awards and Scholarships committees (one year terms).
