Grab and Go: Expanding and Strengthening Senior Programming

Participants will be introduced to creative and fun ways to expand and strengthen programming at senior facilities and at the library, especially for patrons living with dementia. Whether utilizing memory kits, travel and reading programs, and antique items to inspire memories and encourage conversations, or by incorporating painting, stuffed animals, therapy dogs, and music activities to stimulate the senses, participants can develop ideas that work for their library, community, and budget. 

Learning Outcomes

Participants will:

  1. Learn creative and fun ways to expand and strengthen programming at senior facilities
  2. Discover methods to interact effectively with patrons living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia
  3. Explore new and innovative partnerships to improve the impact your programming has on senior patrons

David J. Kelsey is the Manager of the Outreach Services Department at St. Charles (IL) Public Library and is the 2018-2019 Treasurer for ABOS. David was a 2017 ALA Emerging Leader and was recently published in the March/April 2017 edition of Public Libraries with the article “The Power of Community Outreach: Meeting the Demands of the Growing Senior Population.” David’s department is the recipient of a 2017 Outreach Award, sponsored by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. He received his MLIS from the University of Rhode Island.

 

Dana Hintz is an Outreach Services Assistant for the St. Charles (IL) Public Library where she has expanded and strengthened services and programming to senior facilities in the community. Dana has launched numerous strategic community partnerships including with Northwestern Medicine and Salvation Army. She will be presenting at the Illinois Library Association’s 2018 Reaching Forward Conference in May.
