Welcome to Coolborough: A Story-Based Hybrid Training Program for New Library Directors

Thursday, 11/12/2020
  • 1:00 PM (Eastern)
  • 12:00 PM (Central)
  • 11:00 AM (Mountain)
  • 10:00 AM (Pacific)

The Massachusetts Library System is a state-level consortium that provides professional development for library staff. Our most popular program is Basic Library Techniques (BLT), which consists of foundational training primarily for small library directors. By transitioning from 2 days of lectures to a new model including a narrative tutorial, applied assignments, and peer discussion we are able to meet growing demand for a contemporary audience and create a deeper learning experience.

This webinar will describe our process for redesigning the BLT program, as well as the strategies we used to foster participants' engagement and transfer of learning. We will also discuss further adaptations made to accommodate an online-only audience during the COVID-19 crisis.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this webinar, the participant will be able to:

  • Compare the benefits of in-person, online and blended learning for library professional development, with a specific focus on comprehensive large-scale programs
  • Apply an immersive narrative approach in order to provide learners from varied backgrounds with opportunities to explore and practice real-world scenarios
  • Describe strategies for engagement with both peer learners and real-world colleagues in online and classroom components of a blended professional development program.
  • Identify examples of instructional techniques that facilitate creation of immersive and engaging blended and online learning experiences
  • Evaluate modifications necessary for a professional development program to operate in the time of COVID-19
