Syllabi for Young Adult Literature and Services Courses

The competencies listed in Young Adults Deserve the Best: Competencies for Librarians Serving Youth, were developed in 1981 as a guide for library educators involved in pre-service training. The current pressing demand for librarians who can serve young adults in school and public libraries, has created a need for training library staff who are often thrust into the role of young adult librarian without any type of pre-service training. Frequently these librarians are required to find methods for educating themselves about library service to young adults - one aspect of which might include workshops/training. However, that training might not provide staff members with a broad overview of the field of young adult services so that they have the core knowledge necessary to provide high quality service. To assist these librarians this directory provides links to course syllabi that serve as the basis for an individual's professional development plan.
