Meet the 2008 Friends of YALSA

Our Mission

Friends of YALSA was created to ensure excellence in the Association's traditional programs and services to library workers serving teens and to support growth in new directions as our profession meets the exciting challenges of the 21st century.

As a Friend of YALSA you can choose to support one or more of these initiatives at the core of YALSA's mission.  Friends support:

  • Continuous Learning: creating opportunities for all members and library workers to grow through grants, providing scholarships to those in need and offering distance learning and institutes.
  • Advocacy: educating members, library workers, the general public and policy makers about the importance of providing excellent library services to teens, and the critical role that library workers and libraries play in helping teens develop key literacy skills and a lifelong appreciation of reading.
  • Research: guiding and promoting research in the field of young adult librarianship through grants, publications, and other means to ensure that the field of librarianship has the necessary knowledge to meet the needs of teens.
  • Teen Literacy & Young Adult Literature: sponsoring literacy initiatives such as Teen Read Week, YALSA’s booklists and book awards, guaranteeing YALSA's place in the forefront of our nation's adolescent literacy campaigns.
  • Planning for the Future: helping to attract new members and retain existing ones, creating public awareness campaigns, planning and carrying out new initiatives to pursue excellence in library service to young adults, and more.

Leadership Endowment

Meet the Leadership Endowment Donors!

At the 2007 Annual Conference YALSA Past Presidents Jennifer Gallant and Pam Spencer Holley announced their plans to donate funds to establish a leadership endowment for YALSA. The Board of Directors supported this effort. In August, a letter from Gallant and Holley went out to all of YALSA’s Past Presidents encouraging them to donate to this new fund and just over $11,000 was raised. In February 2008 YALSA’s Board of Directors voted to move $25,000 from the operating budget into this fund in FY09.

Goals: The primary purpose of the YALSA Leadership Endowment of is to generate income to support the development of future leaders both within the association and throughout the profession in order to insure the future growth of YALSA and the field of young adult librarianship.

Use of Funds: YALSA’s leadership recognizes that the importance of establishing an endowment to generate permanent interest/dividend income which can be used to support specific leadership development initiatives such as scholarships, fellowships and awards, mentoring programs, leadership institutes, travel and workshop grants, etc. The principal of the endowment is not available for current operations, and the interest/dividends as a portion of the net earnings would support identified programs, in accordance with ALA Long Term Investment Policy 8.5. The endowment would include only monies donated without restrictions. All funds in the YALSA Leadership Endowment, regardless of their sources, are considered to be the funds of YALSA.
