The RUSA Awards ProgramRUSA recognizes outstanding achievement by members of the library profession. These awards honor librarians, publishers, libraries, and authors for significant current or past achievements such as publications, program development, and leadership in the profession.
Awards may include a citation and may also include a cash award. RUSA awards may be made to individuals or groups. Depending on the terms of the award, recipients need not necessarily be members of RUSA. All RUSA awards must conform to the guidelines contained in the Awards Manual of the American Library Association. Information on qualifications for the particular awards are provided on the individual award pages. Contact information for committee chairs also is included. Awards are presented at the following ALA Annual Conference. Deadline for receiving submissions is the business day nearest December 15.

ABC-CLIO Online History Award is offered every other year beginning in 2005. It consists of $3,000 donated by ABC-Clio, a publisher of reference materials in the field of history, and a citation recognizing a person or a group of people producing (1) a freely available online historical collection, or (2) an online tool tailored for the purpose of finding historical materials, or (3) an online teaching aid stimulating creative historical scholarship. It is administered by the History Section of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). Deadline for receiving submissions is the business day nearest December 15.
A $1,000 cash award given to a student enrolled in an ALA accredited master's degree program to attend the ALA Annual Conference and a one-year membership in the Business Reference and Services Section (BRASS) of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). The applicant should have demonstrated interest in a career as a business reference librarian, the award is administered by RUSA. Deadline for receiving submissions is the business day nearest December 15.
The Virginia Boucher–OCLC Distinguished ILL (Interlibrary Loan) Librarian Award is an annual award consisting of $2,000 and a citation recognizing a librarian for outstanding professional achievement, leadership, and contributions to interlibrary loan and document delivery through publication, during the previous two years, of significant professional literature, participation in professional associations, and/or innovative approaches to practice in individual libraries that is administered by Sharing and Transforming Access to Resources Section (STARS)of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). A medal that honors the creation of a reference work of outstanding quality and significance, presented by the Collection Development and Evaluation Section (CODES) of the Reference & User Services Association (RUSA). Deadline for receiving submissions is the business day nearest December 15.
The Reference and User Services Association and Arthur Brody and the Brodart Foundation have established the Sophie Brody Medal, an award for the U.S. author of the most distinguished contribution to Jewish literature for adults. The award, which consists of a medal for the winner and citations for honor books, is funded by Arthur Brody and the Brodart Foundation, and is given to encourage, recognize and commend outstanding achievement in Jewish literature. Works of fiction and non-fiction for adults published in the United States in the preceding year will be eligible for the award. Deadline for receiving submissions is the business day nearest December 15.
Annual award of $1,000 to support the attendance at Annual Conference of a public librarian who has performed outstanding business reference service and who requires financial assistance to attend the ALA Annual Conference, presented by the Business Reference and Services Section (BRASS) of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). Deadline for receiving submissions is the business day nearest December 15.
Annual award of $2,000 (up to half of which can be used to cover expense of attending ALA Annual Conference to receive award) that recognizes one librarian who, or library that has created an innovative service for a minority business community, or has been recognized by that community as an outstanding service provider, presented by the Business Reference and Services Section (BRASS) of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). The Emerald Research Grant Award will be awarded to individuals or groups seeking support to conduct research in business librarianship. Margaret E. Monroe Library Adult Services Award A citation to honor a librarian who has made significant contributions to library adult services, administered by the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). The Gale Cengage Learning Award for Excellence in Business Librarianship is a citation and $3,000 cash award to an individual who has made a significant contribution to business librarianship, is administered by Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). The Gale Cengage Learning Award for Excellence in Reference and Adult Library Services is a citation and $3,000 cash award given to a library or library system for developing an imaginative and unique resource to meet patrons' reference needs, administered by Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). A citation and $1,500 cash award to a librarian, library or publisher to encourage professional achievement in historical reference and research librarianship, presented by the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). This annual citation, named for Margaret E. Monroe, is presented to a librarian who has made a significant contribution to, and had an impact on, library service to adults. Margaret E. Monroe, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison until her retirement in 1981, was nationally known for her contributions to teaching, research and service in the field of library services to adults. An annual cash award of $5,000 and a citation to an individual who has made a distinguished contribution to reference librarianship, presented by the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). Deadline for receiving submissions is the business day nearest December 15.
A plaque and $2,500 cash award presented to recognize the most outstanding article published in RUSQ (previously RQ) during the preceding two-volume year, presented by the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). Deadline for receiving submissions is the business day nearest December 15.
A plaque given to a library or library system to honor significant work with the labor community and to recognize the history and contributions of the labor movement toward the development of this country, presented by the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). Award A citation and $3,000 cash award to an individual reviewer, group, editor, review medium or organization to recognize excellence in book reviewing and other media for libraries. The award recipient is selected for significant achievement related to a reviewing process that helps librarians make selection decisions, administered by the Collection Development and Evaluation Section (CODES) of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). Travel award of $1,000 given to one library practitioner who is new to the field of interlibrary loan/document delivery or electronic reserves, for travel, registration, and membership at ALA Annual Conference. Deadline for receiving submissions is the business day nearest December 15.
