CHICAGO - The American Library Association-Allied Professional Association (ALA-APA), an organization for the advancement of library employees, which advocates for improving the salaries and status of librarians and support staff, is sponsoring the third annual National Library Workers Day (NLWD) on Tuesday, April 15, during National Library Week (April 13-19). NLWD is a day to recognize the valuable contributions made by all library workers - including librarians, support staff and others.

The theme for National Library Workers Day is "Libraries Work Because We Do," which focuses on how library services depend on the important work done by each library staff member and department.

Libraries are changing and dynamic places, and continue to bring in new technologies to serve their users – including wireless Internet access, laptops for in-library use, 24/7 online reference help, e-books, blogs, gaming and MP3s.

Today’s public libraries are thriving technology hubs that millions rely on for first or only choice for Internet access. Libraries don’t just offer the hardware, but also offer the expertise of librarians in helping teach people how to use new technologies and find the information they need quickly. While Google can give you 50,000 responses to your inquiry, your librarian can help you find the one answer you need.

America’s library staffs also are helping level the playing field for job seekers. Only 44 percent of the top 100 U.S. retailers accept in-store paper applications last year - down from 68 percent in 2004. Library staffs are helping library users navigate the Web to find work, apply for jobs online, type resumes and cover letters and open e-mail accounts.
