Banned Books Week Read-Out Logo

You are invited to come and celebrate your freedom to read during the 26th annual celebration of Banned Books Week. Join the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual FreedomMcCormick Freedom Museum, and the Chicago Tribune in Chicago, IL at the Pioneer Plaza (on Michigan Ave between the Tribune Tower and the Chicago River) on Saturday, September 27, 2007, from 12:00 to 4:30 p.m., for the Banned Books Week Read-Out!  Several frequently challenged authors will join Chicago celebrities and ALA VIPs to read passages from their favorite banned and challenged books.  Admission is FREE.

   Judy Blume is the author of young adult classics such as Blubber, Forever, Tiger Eyes, Then Again, Maybe I Won't, and Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret - all five of which appear on the Top 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 2000-2007.

 

   Stephen Chbosky is author of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, number 10 on the Top Ten Most Challenged Books of 2007.

 

   Chris Crutcher is returning to the Banned Books Week Read-Out for a second year.  He is author of Athletic Shorts, Whale Talk, Running Loose, and many more fantastic young adult novels.

 

   Between The Giver and the Anastasia Krupnick series, Lois Lowry is a regular on our Top Ten Challenged Books lists.  She is also author of Summer to Die, Number the Stars, and Find a Stranger, Say Good-bye.

 

   Lauren Myracle is author of the wildly popular "IM Series" (TTYL, TTFN, and L8r G8r), as well as the trilogy Eleven, Twelve, and Thirteen TTYL is number six on the Top Ten Most Challenged Books of 2007.

 

   Peter Parnell is a playwright and co-author of And Tango Makes Three, which topped our challenged book list in both 2006 and 2007.

 

   Justin Richardson, M.D. is the coauthor of Everything You Never Wanted Your Kids To Know About Sex (But Were Afraid They'd Ask) and coauthor of the most frequently challenged book of 2006 and 2007—And Tango Makes Three.


City Lit Theatre will once again present theatrical readings of challenged works.

   Ilene Cooper is the author of more than 30 books for children and young people.

Mary Schmich is a Chicago Tribune columnist.

Jim Rettig is president of the American Library Association.

   Matt Ryd will be performing censored music at the Read-Out.

Eric Zorn is the Chicago Tribune metro columnist.
