Strategic Planning Committee Description

Membership: 5, including Chair. Membership should include a past-president of YALSA, a past board member, and a current board member. If possible, there should also be a member of the Organization and Bylaws Committee included in the membership. The Chair is an ex-officio member of the YALSA Board of Directors.

Qualifications: YALSA members who must be able to attend both the Midwinter Meeting and Annual Conference of ALA.

Term of Office: 2 years

Charge: To work with the YALSA Board throughout the strategic planning process and in between planning cycles, including but not limited to: connect with members to ensure an inclusive planning process, monitor the implementation strategy for the current strategic plan, to communicate the goals of the plan and the planning process to the general membership and to official member groups, and to encourage members and member groups to take an active role in helping YALSA achieve its goals.

Procedures: After each Annual Conference and Midwinter Meeting, the Strategic Planning Committee recommends revisions, additions and corrections, which are turned in to the YALSA staff. The changes are made in the YALSA office and the revised document is sent to the Strategic Planning Chair.

History: The YALSA Board suspended the Long Range Planning Committee at Annual, 1993. At that time, they wished to determine the new responsibilities, if any, of the committee, since the committee had developed a long range plan, which the Board adopted at Midwinter, 1993. The committee was reactivated by President Judy Druse in September, 1993. The YALSA Board approved the name change from Long Range Planning Committee to Strategic Planning Committee at the 1997 Annual Conference. The YALSA Board updated the charge during its 2009 Summer Conference Call.
