The Future of Serials Control:
Implementation of the MARC21 Holdings Format

Hilton & Towers, Continental BR 5
Friday, June 15, 2001, 8:30 a.m.- 5:30 p.m.

CO-SPONSORED BY MARBI

The preconference interprets the MARC 21 Holdings Format in the context of contemporary ILS serials control systems to show how the format is employed to facilitate next expected issue prediction, claiming and the posing of holdings to OPACs and union lists.

As more commercial ILS vendors are basing predictive serials control systems on the MARC21 Holdings Format, libraries must cultivate an understanding of MARC holdings coupled with an appreciation of how the format serves their needs in anticipating next expected issue, claiming, and contributions to OPACs and union lists. After providing an overview of the format, predictive serials check-in will be demonstrated across a variety of commercial platforms with a view to understanding its role in holdings prediction and communication. Discussion will include a description of current efforts in CONSER to share publication patterns between libraries.

Audience:

People interested in issues encountered in using the MARC21 Holdings Format. Previous experience using automated serials check-in systems, in the context of integrated library systems, is not necessary but will be helpful. Those interested in shared holdings information and union listing should find these developments of considerable interest.
