We asked librarians to tell us how they used Kids! @ your library Campaign tool kit materials to promote their library to kids and their families. The ALSC Public Awareness Committee has chosen ten winners based on their overall and skillful use of resources. Winners will receive a $100 cash prize. Many thanks to all those who submitted a contest entry!
And the winners are...
The Public Library of Charlotte-Mecklenburg County, North Carolina The Library Card Campaign at the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County used the So Much to See. So Much to Do. @ your library® theme to engage and energize the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community about making sure every child in the county in grades K through 5 had a library card by January 2007.
Foster Elementary School, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania The second graders at Foster Elementary School created a music video, using Bill Harley’s song “At Your Library,” as a promotion for their school library. Students filmed, acted, and helped to edit the video and had an awesome time doing it.
Dayton (Ohio) Metro Library, E. C. Doren Branch As part of their Kids! @ your library Week celebration, the branch hosted a Pet Shower. Patrons were asked to bring in supplies for pets, which were given to a local animal shelter. In exchange, librarians shared stories and served “Puppy Chow” to all who attended. The Puppy Chow was served in re-sealable plastic bags, decorated with "So Much to See. So Much to Do." die-cut stickers. They tied the two programs together, adding a colorful finishing touch!
Cuyahoga County Public Library, Parma South Branch, Parma, Ohio The Parma South Branch used the So Much to See. So Much to Do. logo and list of “10 Great Things for Kids to Do @ your library®” to create a colorful bookmark with their library contact information.
Johnson County Public Library, Franklin Branch, Franklin, Indiana Staff members at the Franklin Branch of Johnson County Public Lbrary used Bill Harley's song “At Your Library,” and the Library Rap song in a game of musical chairs with program participants. They also used the So Much to See. So Much to Do. logo on all their school-age publicity.
Office of Library and Information Services, State of Rhode Island, Providence The Rhode Island Office of Library and Information Services, with the help of some children's services librarians, has been working with the Providence Journal's Newspaper in Education Office for several years. They included the camera-ready art of both full-page Kids! @ your library® print ads (English and Spanish) on the front page of the section. Thanks to funding from the McDonald's Restaurants of Rhode Island, almost 24,000 copies were distributed by the Journal with a certain day's newspaper to elementary schools throughout the state.
Pamunkey Regional Library, Hanover, Virginia As part of their five-year stategic plan, the Pamunkey Regional Library began focusing on additional ways to promote library services. Beginning in September 2006, each of the 10 branches and bookmobile of the library system began to use Kids! @ your library® materials to highlight library resources for children. They planned to continue with the campaign through the end of that school year.
Maricopa County Library District, Phoenix, Arizona In February 2007, the Maricopa County Library District sponsored a month-long Family Festival promoting the theme of So Much to See, So Much to Do @ your library® throughout Maricopa County. They used the campaign theme and logo widely.
H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library, Henderson, North Carolina Library youth services staff highlighted the "So Much to See/So Much to Do" logo and theme by holding a coloring contest. The contest was open to anyone - babies to age 17. Seventy creative folks entered the contest. During a Library Card Sign-up Month event, "Discover Night," the staff introduced the coloring contest to young participants amidst face painting and photo-ops with the campaign logo prominently featured.
Hearst Library, Lead, South Dakota Inspired by the Kids! Campaign's ALA Graphics materials, a local graphic artist donated her time and talent to paint an eye-catching library window display, featuring the library dragon and other characters from the campaign bookmark.
