ALSC Committees

ALSC's nearly 60 committees, task forces, and discussion groups carry out the work of the Association and develop valuable programs, publications, and resources for youth librarians. Most committees require in-person meetings at ALA Annual Conference and Midwinter Meeting, but some committees include virtual positions and a few function almost entirely virtually. You must be a personal member of ALSC in order to serve on a committee. Our best-known committees are those that select our prestigious children's literature awards, including the Newbery and Caldecott, but there are dozens of additional ways to participate.

Please visit the links at the left to explore ALSC's many committees and learn more about their function statements, current rosters, and activity reports. To volunteer for a committee, please fill out the ALSC Committee Volunteer Form and submit it to the ALSC office. Appointments are two years in length, except for chair terms, which are one year. Appointments are made in March/April (with terms beginning at the close of the following Annual Conference) for most committees. Other committees, mainly award and media evaluation committees, are appointed in August/September.
