  • Administration Actions Against Open Government
    The Homeland Security Act requires procedures to promulgate for "safeguarding" a vaguely defined set of information, “Sensitive Homeland Security Information,” and sharing it among firefighters, police officers, public health researchers and federal, state, and local governments. These procedures are likely to also provide guidelines for Sensitive But Unclassified information
  • Less Access to Less Information - Agency Initiatives
    The American Chemical Society is calling on Congress to shut down the NIH's PubChem, a freely accessible database on small organic molecules. PubChem is an important component of NIH's Molecular Libraries Initiative, which is a key element of the NIH "road map" for medical research.
  • Agency Initiatives Against Open Government
    A bedrock NIH principle is that medical research information developed with public funds must be made freely and publicly available for the good of advancing medical research to cure disease.
  • Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act

    This legislation seeks to decrease the levels of lead and phthalates in products intended for children and will be enforced by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). These new regulations will not come into effect until February 10th, 2009.

  • E-Government

    As government agencies at the local, state, and federal level increasingly move to the online world to directly provide services, tremendous opportunities and demands have been created for libraries. As part of continuing discussions within the library community, COL is working with other partners and stakeholders to develop a legislative proposal for introduction during the 110th Congress, to seek recognition and resources for libraries providing E-Government services.
  • EPA Library Closings
    Archive of information and links related to the EPA library closings threat. The five Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) libraries that were closed reopened on September 30, 2008. The EPA followed through on what was stated in their Report to Congress on the state of the EPA National Library Network.
  • Federal Libraries and Information Programs
    The ALA Washington Office is monitoring many issues related to Federal Libraries and Information Programs, but most recently threatened or closing federal libraries. This is a new and expanding section of our website that includes resources to respond to library closings, as well as, a Wiki to report and discuss threatened federal libraries.
  • FEMA Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant Program
    FEMA's Pre-Disaster Mitigation (PDM) Grant program provides funds for hazard mitigation planning and the implementation of mitigation projects prior to a disaster event. PDM provides a way to raise risk awareness and reduce the nation's disaster losses through planning and the implementation of cost-effective mitigation measures.
