Borrowing and Lending Books for Exhibition

Created by the ALSC National Planning of Special Collections Committee (2002)

Institution Policies

Policies regarding loaning and borrowing books and manuscripts should be incorporated in the collection management statement developed by the institution. The Lender and the Borrower have several issues to consider:

Incoming Loans

  • Authorization procedures
  • Liability exposure
  • Insurance
  • Handling and use of books

Outgoing Loans

  • Borrower: To whom will loans be made?
  • Materials: What will be loaned?
  • Loan approval procedures
  • Appraisal fees and insurance
  • Handling and use of books
  • Facilities Report
