Georgia Library Considers Policy for Movie ScreeningsThe Columbus (Ga.) Public Library is considering implementing a policy to restrict younger patrons from watching movies screened at the library. Attorney Greg Ellington recommended to the Muscogee County Library Board’s Operations Committee that patrons should be at least 17 or accompanied by an adult in order to view any movies other than those rated “G” by the Motion Picture Association of America, according to the March 29 Columbus Ledger-Enquirer.Chattahoochee Valley Regional Library System Deputy Director Donna Osborne pointed out that the MPAA ratings are only guidelines, not law, and that under such a policy, many teens who attended showings of PG-rated movies Shrek and Spider-Man last summer would have been turned away. “You’ll be hard pressed to find a ’G’ movie,” she said. The committee could vote on the recommendation April 18; if approved, the issue would go to the full library board. Posted March 31, 2006. |
