Colorado Woman Gets Probation for Stealing 800 Books

A woman involved in the theft of hundreds of books from the Weld Library District in Greeley, Colorado, was sentenced July 10 to three years on intensive probation and 120 hours of community service.

Sara Jane Gutierrez pled guilty to theft and forgery in May, admitting she obtained library cards under different names by using names and addresses from magazines or other mail, the Greeley Tribune reported July 12. In all, she used or helped others use 17 different names to check out some 800 books with an estimated value of $30,000, which were then sold to a used bookstore. Gutierrez herself used 10 names to obtain 100 books, worth about $8,500. Prosecutors haven’t decided how much to seek in restitution for the library.

Police have a warrant out for Gutierrez’s boyfriend, David Michael Garcia, who they say worked with her to “clean” the books with bleach and glue so they could be resold.

According to the Tribune, Gutierrez tested positive for methamphetamine and marijuana use, is pregnant, and must complete parenting classes and substance-abuse treatment as part of her sentence.
