Design Firm Files Suit over Indianapolis LibraryLess than a week after the Indianapolis–Marion County Public Library board fired the original firm hired to design and implement the library’s expansion project, the architects have sued the library for breach of contract. Woollen Molzan and Partners asked the U.S. District Court in Indianapolis April 24 to reinstate them or prohibit the library from using its design in the new building, the Indianapolis Star reported April 27.Library trustees voted unanimously to terminate the contract April 20. Board members Gary Meyers cited unacceptable delays and the “discovery of new design errors we believe are attributable to the design team,” NBC affiliate WTHR-TV reported. The board promptly hired design firm CSO Schenkel Shultz to complete the project. The firm’s lawsuit says the library infringed its copyright by terminating the contract and hiring another company to copy or develop Woollen Molzan’s plans. Originally scheduled for completion by the end of 2005, the project ran into trouble when cracks and holes were discovered in the concrete foundation of the new facility’s underground garage in 2004. Woollen Molzan is one of the companies the library sued at the time. The $103-million project has been plagued by delays and $45 million in cost overruns, with completion now estimated by early 2008.
