Columbus Teen Sentenced for Library CrashA youth who pleaded guilty to stealing a Cadillac that crashed into the Livingston branch of the Columbus (Ohio) Metropolitan Library in February was sentenced April 27 to at least one year in juvenile prison and 120 hours of community service. Fifteen-year-old Deon Roberts was one of three teens who were in the stolen car that smashed through the library wall and pinned Branch Manager Shirley W. Freeman behind her desk, breaking her left arm and fracturing some ribs.Minutes before the February 6 crash, library staffers had kicked out Roberts and the two other youths for creating a disturbance. Several weeks earlier, Roberts had been brought into Freeman’s office because he had used profanity in the library. Freeman testified at the hearing in Franklin County Juvenile Court, saying that she has recurring nightmares based on the incident. The April 28 Columbus Dispatch reported that physical therapy has helped her regain partial use of her left arm, which is still stabilized by pins and plates. She has not yet returned to work.
